Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 October 2026
Trundle is an iPhone step counter made by Alex Powell (“I”, “me”). This policy explains what the app reads, what it stores, and what leaves your device. I've tried to keep it plain and complete.
The short version
- There is no account, no sign-up and no advertising.
- With your permission, Trundle reads your step count and walking and running distance from Apple Health, only to show your progress, history, badges and widgets.
- Your Health data stays on your iPhone. It is never sent to me or to anyone else, never used for advertising or marketing, and never sold.
- Trundle does send anonymous app-usage, performance and crash data to Google Firebase so I can fix bugs and improve the app. That data never contains your steps, distance or other Health values.
1. Health data (Apple Health)
When you tap “Connect Apple Health”, iOS asks whether Trundle may read your steps and walking and running distance. Trundle only reads this data. It does not write anything to Apple Health.
- What it's used for: calculating today's progress, your comparison with yesterday, streaks, history and badges, and drawing your widgets.
- Where it's processed: on your iPhone.
- What Trundle keeps on your device: your daily goal, which badges you've unlocked, and a small snapshot (today's steps, your goal and the last seven days) in storage shared between the app and its widgets, so widgets can show instantly. All of it is removed when you delete the app.
- Background updates: Trundle may be woken by iOS when new steps are recorded so your progress and widgets stay current.
- Sharing: Health data is not shared with third parties, and is not used for advertising, marketing or data mining. It is never included in the analytics or crash data described below.
You can change or withdraw Trundle's access at any time in the Health app or in iOS Settings under Health. Without access, Trundle can't show your steps.
2. App-usage, performance and crash data (Google Firebase)
Trundle uses Google Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics and Performance Monitoring) to understand how the app is used and to find and fix problems. Google acts as a service provider on my behalf. This is the data involved:
| Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Usage | Which screens you open and which buttons you tap; which history period (day, week, month, year) you choose; when you jump to a date; whether you allowed Health access; the daily goal you set; which badge you open. |
| Performance | How long the app takes to launch and load your data. |
| Crashes and errors | Crash reports and error codes, with your device model, iOS and app version, the screen you were on and a short trail of recent actions. |
| Technical identifiers | A random identifier Firebase creates for the app installation. Google also receives your IP address when your device sends data, as with any internet service. |
This data does not include your name, email address, location, contacts, or any step, distance, streak or other Health value. I can't tell who you are from it, because Trundle has no accounts.
I use it only to fix crashes, keep the app fast and decide what to improve. It is not used for advertising, and Trundle does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Trundle doesn't currently include an in-app switch to turn this collection off. If you object to it, please contact me (section 7).
Google's own explanation of how Firebase handles data is at firebase.google.com/support/privacy. Google may process this data outside the UK, including in the United States, using recognised transfer safeguards. I keep the data for as long as it's useful for the purposes above, in line with the retention settings I choose in Firebase.
3. What Trundle doesn't do
- It doesn't ask for an account, name or email address.
- It doesn't access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
- It doesn't show ads or sell your data.
- It doesn't use your Health data to profile you or for any purpose other than showing it back to you.
4. Who receives data
Only Google (as described in section 2) receives the usage, performance and crash data, and only to provide those services to me. I may also disclose information if the law requires it. Apple separately handles things like your Health data and App Store account under its own privacy policy.
5. Security
Your Health data is held by iOS on your device and protected by your device's security. Data that Trundle sends to Firebase is encrypted in transit. No system is perfectly secure, but Trundle is designed to keep what it collects to a minimum.
6. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to access, correct or delete personal data held about you, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive it in a portable form. Because Trundle has no accounts and the data above isn't linked to your identity, I may not be able to find your records without help; deleting the app removes everything stored on your device. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
I process the usage, performance and crash data described above on the basis of my legitimate interest in running a reliable, improving app.
7. Children
Trundle isn't aimed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect personal data from them.
8. Changes to this policy
If I change how Trundle handles data, I'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, I'll say so in the app's release notes.
